Over 5.2 Million Pools Recalled in the US and Canada After Nine Deaths
Over the past twenty years, more than 5.2 million aboveground swimming pools sold across the US and Canada have been recalled following nine reported drowning deaths. The recall includes various pools from Bestway, Intex Recreation, and Polygroup, which have been sold by major retailers since 2002.

As stated in notices from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, these pools feature compression straps along the exterior that could serve as footholds for small children, potentially enabling unsupervised access to the water.

This poses a significant drowning risk, with the CPSC reporting nine children in the US drowning after accessing these pools between 2007 and 2022, ages ranging from 22 months to 3 years. No additional deaths have been reported in Canada. Owners are advised to contact the manufacturers for a free repair kit to replace the straps with a rope. Meanwhile, they should prevent children from accessing the pools without supervision or drain them until repairs are complete.
All pools included in the recall are at least 48 inches in height and can be recognized by specific brand and model information outlined in the recall announcements. These products were available for purchase between 2002 and 2025 through a variety of channels, both online and in-store, at major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Lowe’s, Costco, and Amazon.. Approximately 5 million were sold in the US, and 266,000 in Canada.
