Transforming Conversations Into Insights With AI

Before the advent of AI, India faced issues such as fragmented data, scalability challenges, complex natural language, data integrity concerns, operational context challenges, privacy and compliance requirements, resource limitations, and risks of misaligned metrics and misinterpretation in transforming conversational insights. ABRIDGE was created to tackle these obstacles.

Established in 2018 by Shiv Rao (MD, CEO), Florian Metze (CSO), and Sandeep Konam (CTO), the company provided enterprise-level AI solutions for clinical conversations, earning the trust of major healthcare systems. It improved outcomes for clinicians, nurses, and revenue cycle teams at scale. Abridge converts patient-clinician discussions into contextually relevant, clinically valuable, and billable AI-generated notes.

One standout feature is Linked Evidence: every part of the summary or note produced by Abridge is traceable back to the original part of the conversation. Clinicians can click a sentence in the generated note and hear the exact audio segment.

This enhances transparency and trust because doctors can verify how the AI arrived at each part of the note.

Origin of ABRIDGE

Abridge was established in 2018, stemming from the Pittsburgh Health Data Alliance—a partnership among UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Pittsburgh.

This alliance combined clinical practice, academic research, and machine-learning expertise, making it an ideal foundation for developing an AI healthcare startup.

Dr. Shiv Rao, a practicing cardiologist, serves as CEO and co-founder. The company was also co-founded by Florian Metze (CSO) and Sandeep Konam (CTO). Their combined experience in medical and AI research, especially from Carnegie Mellon, provided Abridge with both domain credibility and technical expertise.

Dr. Rao directly observed the challenges of clinical documentation, noting that doctors spend significant time writing notes after visits. He believed that clinician–patient conversations hold immense value and, if captured accurately, could be transformed into a structured, useful record, something impossible for humans to do alone. The goal was to create an AI system that listens (“ambient AI”), transcribes, and produces clinical notes, thereby easing clinician workload and enhancing documentation.

Technological Stack

Abridge uses a technology stack that includes modern web and mobile frameworks, cloud services, and a dedicated artificial intelligence (AI) platform built with multiple languages and libraries.

Abridge’s platform centers on core AI and machine learning, featuring proprietary models tailored for healthcare conversations. It leverages key technologies, including linked evidence and partnerships with NVIDIA. The application development employs frameworks and languages such as Node.js, TypeScript, JavaScript, React, React Native, HTML5, and CSS3. Infrastructure is managed via cloud services such as Google Cloud Platform, with containerization and orchestration handled by Docker and Kubernetes.

A PostgreSQL database supports the system. Additional analytics tools include Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, and Hotjar. For communication and collaboration, tools like Google Workspace and Zoom are used. APIs and utilities involve Postman, SendGrid, and Cloudflare.

Fundings & Milestones

Abridge raised over $1.05 billion and achieved a valuation of $5.3 billion by November 2025. The company initially secured modest funding before rapid growth: a $30 million Series B in October 2023 led by Spark Capital and IVP; a $150 million Series C in February 2024 led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, valuing the company at $850 million; a $250 million Series D in February 2025 led by IVP and Elad Gil, increasing its valuation to $2.75 billion; and a $300 million Series E in June 2025 led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Khosla Ventures, setting the valuation at $5.3 billion. Key investors include Bessemer Venture Partners, Redpoint Ventures, Lightspeed, Spark Capital, Union Square Ventures, CVS Health Ventures, Kaiser Permanente Ventures, NVIDIA’s NVentures, and CapitalG (Alphabet).

By mid-2025, Abridge had transitioned from a research-stage startup to deploying its ambient AI scribe platform across more than 150 major U.S. health systems. This included Epic-integrated implementations at institutions like Duke Health, Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, Memorial Sloan Kettering, UNC Health, Inova, and Oak Street Health. The company experienced a 50% increase in enterprise customers between February and June 2025. It received the “Best in KLAS” award for ambient AI in 2024, launched a Contextual Reasoning Engine in 2025 to produce fully billable, auditable notes, and introduced AI tools for revenue cycle management to speed billing and minimise claim denials. Abridge is continuing its rapid growth, developing new foundation models and utilization-management tools to bolster its leadership in AI-driven medical documentation.

Notable Milestones

ABRIDGE transformed clinical documentation with its ambient AI platform, transcribing and summarizing interactions into structured, billable notes, leading industry growth by November 2025. Milestones include $30M Series B funding in October 2023 for U.S. deployments; $150M Series C in February 2024, valuing the firm at $850M, expanding nationwide, integrating with Epic EHR, and earning awards like “Best in KLAS’ and TIME’s Best Inventions. In 2024, a partnership with NVIDIA enhanced language recognition to nearly 100 languages, reducing clinician burnout by up to 55% at Johns Hopkins and Kaiser Permanente. January 2025 saw the launch of Abridge Inside for Emergency Medicine via Epic, adopted by Emory Healthcare; a $250M Series D in February, led by Elad Gil and IVP, raised valuation to $2.75B, with 100+ deployments at Mayo Clinic and Sloan Kettering, and introduced the Contextual Reasoning Engine for revenue-optimized notes. Sagar Sanghvi became CFO in March 2025 to expand across 55+ specialties and 28 languages.

By June 2025, a $300M Series E led by Andreessen Horowitz and Khosla Ventures pushed valuation to $5.3B and total funding over $1.05B, with 150+ health systems and new AI tools to cut billing denials. August featured a partnership with Allegheny Health Network and Highmark Health for payer-provider AI. September improved speech recognition, pediatric rollouts at Seattle Children’s Hospital, and Hartford HealthCare for 44,000 clinicians. By November 2025, Kaiser Permanente’s enterprise-wide deployment across 40 hospitals and 600+ clinics marked the largest healthcare generative AI rollout and quickest tech adoption in 20 years, along with University of Illinois Health’s full-system integration, capturing 30% market share in ambient scribing and setting industry standards.

Why ABRIDGE Matters?

ABRIDGE’s primary goal is to ‘improve understanding in healthcare” by turning conversations into structured clinical data, not just transcribing speech. From the start, the focus was on mapping summaries to the original conversation to ensure transparency and trustworthiness. Additionally, ABRIDGE aims to integrate with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, allowing AI-generated content to seamlessly fit into clinicians’ workflows.
