Apple Appoints John Ternus as the Next CEO of the Company

After 15 years as Apple's CEO, Tim Cook is finally stepping down and making way for the former hardware boss, John Ternus. This makes him only the second leader of Apple since the departure of founder Steve Jobs. The appointment will take effect on Sept. 1, and Cook will assume the role of Executive Chairman at the company.

Although Apple has maintained its dominance in consumer devices, the company has largely avoided the AI path, becoming the only one of the big four to not indulge in the AI race. Their investors have been patient for now, but they won’t remain so for long.  So, in a way, John Ternus has to get right into deep waters just as soon as he takes this new role.

However, this doesn’t mean that Apple has done nothing in AI so far. They launched Apple Intelligence in 2024, which included image and text generators, as well as an integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. But the consumer reception was anything but positive. Some people said it's okay-ish, while most said it's far behind the competition.

A lot is riding on this appointment, as John has to fulfil many expectations, from consumers to investors and everyone in between. Investors are optimistic, however, probably because of John’s background in hardware and bleeding-edge tech.

It has been a privilege to help shape the products and experiences that have changed so much of how we interact with the world and with one another.”
