Boeing Faces $28M Payout to 737 MAX Crash Victim’s Family

A federal jury in Chicago has ordered Boeing to pay over $28 million to the family of Shikha Garg, an environmental worker for the United Nations, who was killed in the 2019 crash of a Boeing 737 MAX in Ethiopia. The verdict marked a significant legal milestone, being the first in numerous lawsuits following the tragic accident that also claimed 346 lives in Indonesia and Ethiopia. Under an agreement reached on the same day, Garg's family will receive $35.85 million, which includes the full verdict amount plus 26% interest. Boeing’s attorneys confirmed that the company will not appeal the decision.

Boeingexpressed sorrow over the loss of lives on both flights. A company spokesperson stated that while most claims have been settled through other means, families retain the right to pursue damages trials. The lawsuit highlighted the defective design of the 737 MAX and Boeing’s alleged failure to warn the public about the aircraft's dangers. The crashes of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, both involving the 737 MAX, were linked to an automated flight control system that contributed to the accidents.

The company has settled over 90% of related civil lawsuits, paying billions of dollars. Previous settlements include payments through lawsuits, deferred prosecution agreements, and other arrangements. Notably, on November 5, Boeing settled three additional lawsuits filed by families of victims from the Ethiopian Airlines crash, although specific terms were not disclosed.
