Boeing Secures $2.8B Contract for Advanced U. S. Strategic Satellites

American aerospace firm Boeing has obtained a $2.8 billion contract from the U. S. Space Force to design and produce two satellites for the Evolved Strategic Satellite Communications (ESS) program. The deal also includes options for two more satellites to strengthen nuclear command, control, and communications (NC 3) for the President and strategic forces globally.

The ESS project strives to provide secure, resilient, and advanced satellite communications essential for key missions, such as Presidential National Voice Conferencing. Since 2020, Boeing has supported this effort through a rapid prototyping contract aimed at developing the necessary technologies and reducing risks.

Boeingreports that the ESS satellites will deliver increased capacity, flexibility, and resilience compared to current strategic communication systems. Positioned in geostationary orbit about 35, 35,700 kilometers from Earth, the satellites will ensure continuous support for strategic military operations.

The ESS system utilizes technologies from Boeing's Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS)-11 and WGS-12 satellites, which have been validated on the commercial O3b mPOWER constellation. These innovations will enable protected signals that can withstand efforts to disrupt or intercept communications.

Boeing aims to deliver the first satellite by 2031. The ESS system will incorporate classified technologies developed in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Defense to meet changing strategic needs.
