Warren Buffett Sells $6.1 Billion in Stocks Before Retirement

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway recently sold $6.1 billion worth of shares, reflecting a trend of selling more stocks than buying over the past few quarters. The company's third-quarter earnings report revealed that during this period, Berkshire sold more shares than it acquired, resulting in net sales of $6.1 billion. Specifically, it sold $12.5 billion worth of stocks and bought $6.4 billion, marking the 12th consecutive quarter of net stock sales. The company has not disclosed which US stocks it bought or sold, but this information will be available later this month.

During this period, Buffett’sBerkshire Hathaway also refrained from share repurchases for the fifth straight quarter. Since May, Berkshire's stock has fallen by 12%, coinciding with Buffett’s announcement of stepping down as CEO, although he will remain as chairman. The selling pattern indicates Buffett’s current cautious stance, influenced by broader economic concerns and rising stock prices across various sectors.

This strategic shift towards selling stocks has resulted in Berkshire's cash reserves reaching a record high of $381.7 billion. Buffett is accumulating cash as he prepares to transition leadership to Vice Chairman Greg Abel, while Buffett himself continues to serve as chairman. It remains uncertain how Abel will utilize this substantial cash reserve, with some speculating it could be used for dividends, potentially the company's first since 1967.

Despite the cautious approach in the equity markets, Berkshire Hathaway reported a solid third quarter. Lower insurance losses contributed to a 34% increase in operating profit, reaching $13.49 billion, surpassing analyst forecasts. Net income also grew by 17%, totaling $30.8 billion. However, the company highlighted ongoing economic uncertainty and declining consumer confidence as challenges, which impacted sales at units like Clayton Homes, Duracell, and Fruit of the Loom, as well as reduced revenue from Jazwares toys.
