California Sues Trump Over Pipeline Restart Order
The state of California has filed a lawsuit against the administration of President Donald Trump with regard to a federal directive that requires the restarting of the Sable Offshore oil pipeline system. This lawsuit was filed by the state of California against the Trump administration regarding a directive from the United States Department of Energy requiring the restart of the Sable Offshore pipeline system. The United States Department of Energy issued the directive to the pipeline operators by invoking the Defence Production Act with the aim of increasing the domestic oil supplies amid the volatility that exists in the global energy market. The Sable offshore pipeline system transports oil from offshore platforms that are located near Santa Barbara to the onshore facilities. This pipeline system has been idle for a long period following the spill that occurred in 2015, and released more than 100,000 gallons of crude oil along the California coast. This led to the shutdown of the pipeline system due to the environmental damage that it caused. The pipeline system, operated by Sable Offshore Corp, can transport around 50,000 barrels of oil daily at full capacity. This is one of the arguments in support of restarting this system, which is likely to boost domestic production and reduce foreign oil dependency. This lawsuit seeks to delay the system's restart until further reviews and permits are issued. The lawsuit demonstrates the tension between federal energy security and state-level environmental regulations. This court ruling is likely to impact federal emergency powers in other energy and environmental conflicts in the United States. Share this article Latest News Categories More News
