CHICAGO — The chief AI officer was 2024's favorite box on the org chart. It is 2026's first consolidation. Boards said the role survives when it owns a product or a cost takeout. It dies when it owns a slide.

The work is being folded into product management, security, and the CFO's productivity agenda. That is less glamorous and more likely to persist.

Executives who took the title as a destination rather than a bridge are updating their LinkedIn. The ones who took it as a license to ship are updating their operating reviews.
