How do you define operational excellence and disciplined execution today?

Operational excellence begins with teamwork and thoughtful planning before execution ever begins. When every person involved clearly understands their role and responsibilities, the likelihood of operational success increases significantly. While there are never absolute guarantees, alignment allows teams to respond to challenges with well-coordinated mitigation actions. Safety is always the highest priority. Operational success means little if people are placed at risk, so every member of the operations team must feel both empowered and responsible to identify hazards that could compromise safety. Much of my perspective comes from years spent in technical roles, observing both successful and unsuccessful operations firsthand. Those experiences shaped my understanding in ways no textbook could. Ultimately, disciplined execution remains accountable to the leader. The leader communicates the plan, builds trust within the team, and then provides the space and respect for that team to carry it out effectively.

What principles would guide you in building a high-performing operations culture?

A strong leader recognizes that every individual brings value to the organization. Listening carefully is often more powerful than directing, because people contribute far more when they feel their ideas and experiences are genuinely respected. Creating a culture that welcomes thoughtful input encourages teams to share insights that might otherwise go unheard. That openness strengthens collaboration and often leads to better solutions. I also believe in building small teams that combine experienced professionals with those earlier in their careers. That balance allows knowledge to flow naturally while encouraging fresh perspectives. Together, these teams can explore what I often describe as the “universe of solutions” before presenting informed recommendations to the accountable decision maker.

Early career exposure in the field, on manufacturing floors, or within operational environments provides lessons that cannot be fully captured in books. While theory can provide useful frameworks, true operational leadership is built through hands-on experience and the insights gained from working directly where operations happen.

How did your leadership perspective evolve as you moved from technical expertise to enterprise leadership?

Leadership at the enterprise level requires navigating a wide range of personalities, cultures, and professional backgrounds while looking beyond one’s own area of expertise. The role becomes less about individual technical precision and more about understanding how diverse teams work together to achieve broader organizational goals. In my experience, meaningful leadership impact is shaped by both trials and triumphs. Every career includes moments of adversity, and those moments often provide the greatest lessons. Difficult experiences build resilience and character, qualities that leaders can share with their teams during challenging periods. Over time, those experiences develop the perspective needed to see the larger picture. That broader understanding helps guide decisions that affect not just one function, but the entire enterprise, creating stability and direction within the organization.

What leadership risks in modern energy operations are often underestimated?

One of the most underestimated risks is something quite simple: driving. Operations often require traveling long distances through areas with heavy industrial traffic, frequently under time pressure. When this is combined with the growing issue of distracted driving, the risk increases considerably. Leaders must set clear expectations that distracted driving will not be tolerated. Encouraging regular breaks and strict adherence to traffic rules is essential. Technology also helps by monitoring vehicle movement and driving habits, not as punishment but as a constant reminder that safety comes first. Another critical factor is situational awareness. In the environments where we operate, a lack of awareness can have severe consequences. Staying alert, avoiding distractions, and maintaining focus on surroundings are fundamental practices that protect both individuals and the broader operation.
