The US Department of Energy has announced a new funding opportunity for small businesses through its SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) and STTR (Small Business Technology Transfer) programs.

US DOE Launches SBIR/STTR Funding for Small Businesses
The US Department of Energy has announced a new funding opportunity for small businesses through its SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research)  and STTR (Small Business Technology Transfer) programs. This funding plan is for Phase 1 projects and emphasizes technologies that support the DOE’s Genesis Mission. This is an early funding announcement. However, a large Phase 1 funding opportunity will be announced later this fall. The Genesis Mission is a DOE initiative that aims to accelerate scientific discoveries and develop new technologies. DOE Under Secretary for Science and Genesis Mission LeadDr. Darío Gil.The SBIR and STTR programs extend that effort to America's small businesses, helping transform advances in AI, quantum information science, biotechnology, and advanced materials into breakthroughs that strengthen U.S. scientific and technological leadership.”   DOE expects to offer around 40 Phase I awards, and the funding will support projects in these four areas:
  • Scaling the Biotechnology Revolution
  • Realizing Quantum Systems for Discovery: AI for Quantum Computing and Networking
  • Designing Materials with Predictable Functionality
  • Achieving AI-Driven Autonomous Laboratories
The DOE SBIR and STTR programs play a vital role in helping American small businesses by providing non-dilutive funding, in which businesses receive money without giving up ownership or equity.  The programs help in key areas, including supporting important research and encouraging the development of new technology. It also helps promote economic growth and lets businesses bring new technologies to market (commercialization). In addition, it is offering about $147 million in Phase II funding to help eligible businesses continue developing their technologies and bring them closer to commercialization.
