Fed officials split over whether financial conditions are tight enough

The statement is unified. The speeches are not.

Federal-style columns and financial district

WASHINGTON — Officially, the Federal Reserve is data-dependent. Unofficially, it is argument-dependent. Regional presidents spent the week offering incompatible readings of the same financial-conditions indexes.

One camp sees still-restrictive real rates and a labor market that is cooling in an orderly way. The other sees a stock market that has decided the cutting cycle is a birthright and a credit market that is once again funding speculative stories.

Markets do not need the argument resolved this month. They need to know it exists. Option prices in rates already do.
