Lumilens, a two-year-old startup company based in San Jose, California, has raised more than $700 million in its latest funding round at a $ 5.5 billion valuation. The company is trying to find a solution to one of the biggest problems in AI data centers. AI chips are becoming faster and more powerful, but the connections between these chips are struggling to transfer data fast enough.

Lumilens wants to use light instead of copper wires to move data inside data centers, and investors think that this could become a very big business. Its technology is designed for data centers with large facilities filled with computers and AI chips.

The financing was accompanied by various big names including Atreides Management, Bain Capital Ventures, Meritech, Seligman Ventures and Spark Capital. Since the company was founded, it has raised more than $900 million.

AI companies are putting the highest number of GPUs into data centers; the problem is that moving all this data between chips is becoming difficult day by day.

Today, many AI chips are connected using copper wires, as copper is popular because it is easy to manufacture, reliable, and widely used, but it also has limitations. As companies try to move more data over longer distances, copper becomes less efficient.

Lumilens wants to light instead of using electricity through copper to transfer data. Light can carry a huge amount of information very quickly, so the company wants to use this technology to move data into AI data centers.

This step is important as AI models use massive computing power; therefore, building huge AI data centers requires millions of chips and accelerators. However, these chips constantly need to communicate with each other, so even if you have powerful GPUs, if the connections aren't fast enough, the whole system can become slower. That’s why companies are looking for better ways to move data and increase the bandwidth.
