Meta Secured a $14.4 Billion Deal to Acquire Scale AI

Meta, the parent organisation of popular social media platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram, has finalised the deal to buy Scale AI and hire its CEO, Alexandr Wang, for Meta’s Superintelligence team for a whopping $14.3 billion at a valuation of $29 billion.

With this move, Meta plans to catapult itself to the forefront of the AI race and incorporate some sort of AI agent or features in all of its offerings, from the Ray-Ban goggles to Instagram and everything in between. This Scale AI acquisition marks Meta’s second-biggest acquisition to date, after having acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion.

Zuckerberg has taken a gamble by poaching Wang, who lacks formal experience in frontier AI research. He hopes that after hiring Wang, Meta’s AI efforts can be turned around by a young and genius leader who is more like Sam Altman than other scientists associated with frontier research in most AI labs on the planet.

But Why Wang? Why did Meta gamble on him? What does he bring to the table? Well, partly because of what he has achieved in so little time. Wang is an MIT dropout who joined Y Combinator as soon as he dropped out of college. However, after a little while, he left the startup to start his own business with Lucy Guo.

At the age of 24, Wang became the youngest self-made billionaire ever after his company’s valuation crossed $7 billion.

Another reason is that with Scale AI, Meta might just be able to compete with new AI models likeDeepSeek, as Wang knows the ins and outs of Scale AI, a pioneer in training AI models. Scale AI has figured out perhaps the most efficient way to train AI models, which will come in handy for Meta and its applications.
