Meta Announces $30 Billion Bond Issue for AI Investment

Meta plans to raise up to $30 billion through its largest bond offering ever, according to a filing on Thursday. This move reflects the broader trend among Big Tech firms rushing to fund extensive artificial intelligence infrastructure projects. The company faces significant costs as it invests heavily in AI, with its capital expenditure expected to be notably higher next year than in 2025. Following this news, Meta's shares dropped by over 11%, as investors responded to a 32% cost increase that outpaced the company's 26% revenue growth.

Meta is conducting a six-part bond sale with maturities from five to 40 years, after its last $10 billion issuance in 2022. Bonds range from $4 billion to $6.5 billion, with Morgan Stanley, Allen & Company, and Blaylock Van as co-managers. It also secured a $27 billion private deal with Blue Owl Capital for its Louisiana data centre, 'Hyperion.'

This boom aligns with industry trends, as Morgan Stanley estimates that tech giants like Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta will spend $400 billion on AI infrastructure this year. Meta is recruiting top AI talent, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg leading a hiring spree for Superintelligence Labs. Employee costs, especially for AI specialists, are expected to increase next year, says CFO Susan Li.

Meta has increased its 2023 capital expenditure outlook to between $70 billion and $72 billion, up from earlier estimates of $66 billion to $72 billion. The bond sale was first reported by IFR and Bloomberg, and it has already influenced market activity, with investors selling U.S. Treasuries to hedge against uncertainties. Overall, Meta's strategic financial moves highlight its focus on AI expansion amid rising costs and competitive talent acquisition.
