Microsoft and OpenAI are Negotiating a High-stakes Relationship Reset

According to a Financial Times report, OpenAI and Microsoft are changing the terms of their agreement to facilitate ChatGPT’s eventual initial public offering while still allowing the software company access to future AI developments.

The newspaper’s sources report that Microsoft has indicated its desire to lose some ownership in Openai’s future for-profit venture in return for the usage rights to newer AI models.

The FT reported that rewording an agreement that began with Microsoft’s first $1 billion investment six years ago is essential for Openai's structural adjustment in its current form. The newspaper did not reveal if it had approached OpenAI or Microsoft for comment on its reporting.

In reaction to the concerns of former employees, academics, and high-profile rivals like Elon Musk, OpenAI is now rethinking its move from a nonprofit to a for-profit organisation.

Sources quoted by Bloomberg last week have said Microsoft is being patient as it seeks to protect its $13.75 billion investment with appropriate safeguards.
