Microsoft Criticised for Suppressing Gaza Dissent with FBI Aid

Microsoft purportedly engaged the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement authorities to oversee internal dissent concerning Gaza. The company flagged employee emails containing the term “Gaza” and took disciplinary action against staff members who interfered with corporate events.

Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that the tech company attempted to suppress employee protests at its Redmond, Washington, campus over the past year. The company reportedly removed some internal posts about the protests and has taken action against employees who openly criticise its leadership, either suspending or dismissing them.

These actions occurred as tensions over Israel’s violent conflict in Gaza increased within the corporate sector. At Microsoft’s annual Build Developer Conference in May, an employee interrupted CEO Satya Nadella’s keynote, accusing the company of facilitating Israeli war crimes through its Azure cloud services. The individual, Joe Lopez, was subsequently fired, CNBC reports.

Microsoft President Brad Smith upheld the company’s policies, stating employees can freely discuss global issues internally as long as they do not disrupt operations. “If we find that any customer is using our technology in ways that breach our terms of service, we will take appropriate measures," Smith stated.

The report stated that Microsoft approached federal and local authorities to help monitor protests, a rare step for a U.S. tech company dealing with internal activism.

Microsoft shares decreased by 0.04% in pre-market trading on Tuesday. Despite the surrounding controversy, the stock has increased 20% this year and 21% in the past 12 months.
