Microsoft and Nvidia are making significant investments in Anthropic through a new partnership, including a $30 billion commitment from the Claude to utilize Microsoft's cloud services. Nvidia plans to invest up to $10 billion, while Microsoft will contribute up to $5 billion. Both companies have also committed to investing in Anthropic's next funding round, highlighting the increasing demand for computing power in the AI industry as companies strive to develop advanced systems that could rival or surpass human intelligence.
This collaboration signifies a strategic move to reduce reliance on OpenAI, which has undergone restructuring and expanded its operations, including a $38 billion deal to buy cloud services from Amazon, aiming to decrease dependence on Microsoft. Despite these changes, OpenAI remains a critical player, with its CEO, Sam Altman, emphasizing a commitment to investing $1.4 trillion in developing substantial computing infrastructure.
The AI sector faces concerns about inflated valuations and dependency loops, where companies support each other's revenues, potentially fueling a bubble. Industry analysts note that the partnership aims to diversify the AI ecosystem by spreading risk across multiple major players, with Microsoft and Nvidia less dependent on OpenAI's success.
Founded in 2021 by ex-OpenAI staff,Anthropic has quickly risen as a formidable competitor, valued at approximately $183 billion. Its focus on enterprise adoption has led to a projected revenue surpassing $26 billion in the coming year, with hundreds of thousands of business customers.
Under the new partnership, Anthropic will collaborate with Nvidia on hardware and model performance improvements, including the use of Nvidia's Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin hardware for up to a gigawatt of compute capacity, estimated to cost between $20 billion and $25 billion. Microsoft will extend access to its latest Claude models via Azure AI Foundry, integrating its services across all major cloud platforms, though Amazon remains Anthropic's primary cloud provider.
