55% of Indian Americans Reject Trump’s India Policies

The 2026 Indian American Attitudes Survey, by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, shows that many Indian Americans are unhappy with US President Donald Trump's second term, especially his handling of US-India relations. The survey was conducted by YouGov, which interviewed 1,000 Indian American adults between November 2025 and January 2026. Only 20% approved of Trump's approach toward India. This is much lower than the 35% approval rate in 2020. It is also far below than 48% who approved of Joe Biden’s handling of India in late 2024. Currently, 55% disapprove of Trump’s policy, while 25% have no opinion.

Respondents believe that issues in trade, technology sharing, and strategic cooperation will affect ties between the two countries. The survey, led by Milan Vaishnav, Sumitra Badrinathan, Devesh Kapur, and Andy Robaina, also shows political divisions. About 46 percent of Indian Americans identify as Democrats, and most of them strongly disapprove of Trump’s India policy. Around 19 percent identify as Republicans, and half of them approve of his approach. More people now call themselves independents.

The survey also highlights concerns regarding the growing discrimination against Indians. More than half of American Indian said they have faced discrimination since 2025, due to their skin color, religion, or country of origin. Online racism against Indians has increased, causing anger, fear, and anxiety. Many avoid political discussions or public displays of identity to stay safe.
