HOUSTON — Oil is not crashing and it is not escaping. Traders said the market is pinned near $82 as OPEC+ production discipline offsets a China demand tape that keeps disappointing the bulls.

Refiners in the U.S. Gulf are running hard enough to keep products from blowing out, which removes one source of crude strength. The other source — geopolitical risk premia — remains, but it is no longer a one-way bid.

For equity investors, that range is almost worse than a trend. Energy cash-flow models like direction. They do not like a six-month argument conducted in a $4 band.
