OpenAI & NVIDIA Plans Massive AI Data Center in Ohio

OpenAI is reportedly in advanced discussions to lease a massive data center campus in Ohio as it seeks to expand the computing infrastructure needed to support its rapidly growing artificial intelligence operations. Reports indicate that the project can secure funding from its strategic partner NVIDIA, the world’s leading chipmaker for AI products. The project would be set up on federal property in Southern Ohio and has the potential to become the largest data center campus specifically designed for AI. It is likely to be developed by SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group, and cost more than $500 billion once completed.

The new campus, at its full capacity, will need 10 GW of electricity, far surpassing most other contemporary data centers. According to the alleged terms of the deal, OpenAI will have access to the building for about 20 years and will gain ownership of the computing machinery housed there. The project is slated to begin operations by 2028. NVIDIA’s involvement could extend beyond just supplying cutting-edge AI infrastructure. There are reports that NVIDIA will also back OpenAI in their funding and lease deals through some form of financial assurance. This would help cement the deep ties between the two firms in the realm of AI.

These conversations highlight the significant and constant need for computing capacity resulting from the current boom in artificial intelligence technology. Firms working on more sophisticated models have spent vast amounts on computing resources, such as data centers and custom hardware. The new Ohio project would be one of the largest investments in AI infrastructure to be made public yet.
