AMD and OpenAI have announced a groundbreaking 6-gigawatt agreement to develop AI infrastructure using AMD Instinct GPUs. The first deployment of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs, amounting to 1 gigawatt, is scheduled for the second half of 2026. This partnership combines AMD’s leadership in high-performance computing with OpenAI's expertise in generative AI, positioning both at the forefront of AI innovation.

OpenAI will collaborate with AMD as a core strategic compute partner, utilizing AMD’s technology, starting with the MI450 series and expanding to future generations. The companies will share technical insights to optimize product roadmaps, building on their previous collaborations with the MI300X and MI350X series. This partnership aims to enable large-scale AI deployments and advance the broader ecosystem.

As part of the agreement, AMDhas issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock, vesting in accordance with specific milestones being met. The initial vesting occurs with the 1 gigawatt deployment, with subsequent vesting tied to scaling efforts and achievement of share-price and technical milestones.

Executives from both companies emphasized the strategic importance of this collaboration. AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su highlighted the partnership’s role in driving global AI buildout. At the same time, OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Greg Brockman underscored its potential to accelerate AI progress and benefit humanity. AMD expects this alliance to generate tens of billions in revenue and significantly boost shareholder value, while jointly building the infrastructure needed for the future of AI.
