SAN JOSE, Calif. — The button is still everywhere. It is slightly less often the one that gets pressed.

A confidential survey of 80 large U.S. merchants, circulated among payments consultants, showed shoppers finishing more often on network wallets and retailer apps than on PayPal's legacy checkout.
