Pentagon Blacklisting Could Cost Anthropic Billions

AI company Anthropic executives say that a US government blacklist could cause serious financial and reputational damage. The company said that this decision could reduce its 2026 revenue by billions of dollars.

On Monday, they filed a lawsuit to stop the US Department of Defense from adding the company to a national security blacklist. The case has shown the increasing tensions between the AI firm and the US military over restrictions on how its technology can be used.

Anthropic’s Chief Financial Officer, Krishna Rao, said, “Across Anthropic's entire business, and adjusting for how likely any given customer is to take a maximal reading, the government's actions could reduce Anthropic's 2026 revenue by multiple billions of dollars”. In addition to that, he also mentioned that if government wont stop and continue to do what they wanted, the impact the impact to Anthropic would be "almost impossible to reverse".

The company also said that hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue from work with the Defense Department could be at risk. If defense contractors stop working with Anthropic, they could lose 50% to 100% of their revenue from defense contractors and others dependent on the Defense Department.

The government’s decision could damage the company’s reputation as a reliable technology partner, said Thiyagu Ramasamy, Head of Public Sector at Anthropic. He also warned that it could reduce sales to private companies not connected to the government.

Anthropic expects an immediate loss of more than $150 million in annual revenue from existing and future defense contracts.

This situation is already affecting businesses. Already, one partner with a multi-million-dollar annual contract switched from Claude to another AI system on a project for the US Food and Drug Administration, eliminating $100 million in expected revenue.
