The Pentagon told US lawmakers this week it needs $80 billion to cover costs tied to the Iran conflict and a range of other non-war expenses. Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg made the rounds on Capitol Hill in a series of phone calls, briefing lawmakers on the figure, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing people familiar with the discussions. A formal supplemental funding request, which would bundle Pentagon needs alongside non-defense priorities like farm aid and disaster relief, could land on Congress's desk within days. The conflict, launched by President Trump on February 28 alongside Israel, has been costly from the jump. The first six days alone ran past $11 billion by Pentagon estimates. By April, the official tally had reached roughly $25 billion. The most recent figure from Pentagon comptroller Jules Hurst, given at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing in May, put operational costs at $29 billion. The $80 billion request now signals the true scale of the tab, covering munitions replenishment, ship operations, personnel pay, and other outstanding bills. This request is far more modest than what came before it. An earlier $200 billion ask drew fierce opposition from lawmakers on both sides, with critics pointing to a cost-of-living crisis already straining American households.
