Perplexity AI’s $34.5B Offer Shakes Up Google Chrome Battle

Perplexity AI has offered $34.5 billion in cash to buy Google’s Chrome browser, as U.S. regulators push for changes that could force Alphabet to sell off key parts of its business.

Perplexity’s offer includes $3 billion in upgrades, keeping Chromium open-source, and not changing Chrome’s default search. The deal would be fully funded in cash, with support from unnamed investors.

Google has not responded to the bid and shows no intention to sell Chrome.It’s fighting a U.S. court decision about its search monopoly. A judge will decide soon if Google must sell Chrome or take other actions.

Experts say Google will probably fight selling Chrome because it’s important for their AI-powered search and staying on top, Reuters reports.

Perplexity, worth $14 billion and supported by Nvidia and SoftBank, wants to grow its AI browser Comet by buying Chrome, competing with companies like OpenAI and Yahoo in AI search.

DuckDuckGo’s CEO Gabriel Weinberg says Chrome could be worth over $50 billion if regulators force a sale, much higher than Perplexity’s $34.5 billion offer.
