$1B Secret Service Upgrade Plan Includes Trump Ballroom

The Republican members of the Senate are planning to allocate around $1 billion to upgrade the United States’ security services. One significant feature of the plan is that the upgrade might involve some construction work on a ballroom in the White House, an idea Donald Trump had raised earlier. According to Trump, the project might cost him up to $400 million and be financed through donations, although it’s uncertain whether taxpayers’ funds would be involved. This funding is part of a much larger package worth nearly $72 billion. The money is mainly meant to support immigration enforcement agencies through 2029. It includes funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Different Senate committees have suggested large amounts for these agencies. For example, one proposal gives $19 billion to CBP for staff and $7.5 billion to ICE investigations. Another plan suggests nearly $31 billion for ICE and $3.5 billion for CBP. The package also includes money for the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, and border security technology. Recently, Trump signed a bill to fund most parts of Homeland Security through September. This helped end a 76-day partial government shutdown linked to disagreements over immigration policies. Republicans are using a process called reconciliation to pass this funding. This allows them to avoid needing 60 votes in the Senate, meaning they can move forward without Democratic support. Some Republicans say the funding is needed for safety and law enforcement. Chuck Grassley blamed Democrats for the earlier shutdown and said the plan will help keep Americans safe.
