Samsung Biologics Buys Stakes in US Drug Manufacturing

Samsung Biologics' U.S. subsidiary will buy GSK's biopharmaceutical facility for $280 million, marking its first full-ownership U.S. production site. The deal includes Human Genome Sciences Inc's two cGMP drug plants in Rockville, Maryland. This move aims to expand Samsung Biologics' global footprint and strengthen its U.S. market presence.

The facility in Maryland is located within one of the U.S. biopharmaceutical clusters. It offers 60,000 liters of drug-substance production capacity, capable of supporting both clinical and commercial manufacturing at scale. Samsung Biologics plans to continue producing existing products at the site while making targeted investments to increase capacity and modernize technology, strengthening supply chain resilience for biologic medicines in the U.S.

Under the terms of the deal, the transaction is expected to close by the end of the first quarter of 2026, though the final price may vary slightly before closing. Samsung Biologics also intends to retain more than 500 existing employees to ensure continuity and stability of operations at the Maryland location. By integrating this facility into its network, the company will offer clients flexible multi-site manufacturing options across the U.S. and South Korea.

The acquisition reflects a broader industry trend of South Korean contract manufacturers establishing U.S. manufacturing bases to better serve long-term market demand and navigate trade policy dynamics.
