Tesla has retracted a letter it sent on Friday regarding a previous plan to end its contract with Australian mining company Syrah Resources to source graphite materials. This decision was based on Syrah Resource’s efforts to produce and supply graphite anode material that meets Tesla’s quality standards and will be used in manufacturing Tesla’s electric vehicle battery technology. The original 2021 agreement between Tesla and Syrah Resources committed Syrah Resources to supply Tesla 8,000 metric tons of graphite anode material over four years from its Vidalia, Louisiana, manufacturing facility. Teslasent a default notice to Syrah in July 2025 due to nonconforming standards in the graphite anode material sample supplied from the Vidalia facility. Until now, the two companies have been able to push back their deadline for sorting out the matter four times, as Syrah has made progress in the production and qualification of the graphite material. According to a press release issued by Syrah to the Australian Securities Exchange, Tesla has agreed that Syrah has demonstrated its capability to produce graphite material in line with the required standards and is making progress towards final qualification.

Many analysts believe that the company’s steps towards a reliable supply of graphite will reduce some risks associated with investing in Syrah, however, relatively high uncertainties remain until all transactions are finalized. Graphite is a core raw material for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles and has been primarily supplied by China. The demand for alternative suppliers has increased among car manufacturers such as Tesla, which continue to seek alternative sources of graphite to ensure supply chain security.
