The U.S. government has confirmed that electric vehicle maker Tesla and South Korea’s LG Energy Solution have signed a $4.3 billion battery supply agreement, highlighting a major partnership in the global energy storage sector. The confirmation clarifies that Tesla was the previously undisclosed customer in the large battery supply contract announced by LG Energy Solution in 2025. At that time, the South Korean company had revealed the value of the agreement but had not publicly identified the buyer due to confidentiality provisions.
Under the deal, LG Energy Solutionwill supply lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that are expected to be used in Tesla’s energy storage systems. The contract will run from August 2027 to July 2030, with the possibility of extending for up to seven additional years, subject to demand and negotiations between the companies. The batteries will be produced at LG Energy Solution’s manufacturing facilities in the United States, helping Tesla reduce its dependence on Chinese battery production has become a priority for both companies as governments encourage localised supply chains for critical technologies.

For Tesla, the agreement supports the growth of its energy storage business, which includes large-scale battery systems used to store electricity for homes, businesses, and power grids. Demand for such systems has been increasing globally as countries expand renewable energy infrastructure and seek more reliable energy storage solutions. The partnership also reflects a shift in the global battery industry's borders, with companies investing heavily in North American manufacturing capacity to meet rising demand for electric vehicles and renewable energy. Strategic supply agreements like this are expected to play a key role in securing long-term production and supply stability.
