Tesla Set to Supply Electricity to Homes Across the UK

Elon Musk’s company, Tesla, is planning to start supplying electricity to homes in the United Kingdom after it received an official electricity supply licence on Thursday from the country’s energy regulator, Ofgem. It allows Tesla to enter the British energy market as a new electricity supplier. Tesla will compete with well-known energy companies such as Octopus Energy, British Gas, and EDF.

The license was given to Tesla Energy Ventures to focus on energy services. This approval process was started in July last year. With the help of this license, they can expand their clean energy business in Britain. The company will use its solar energy systems and battery storage technology to supply electricity directly to households.

Tesla already has another subsidiary, Tesla Motors Limited, which holds a licence to generate electricity in the UK. This shows that they already have work experience in the British energy sector. With the help of stored electricity, it can be used later in the home or to charge Tesla electric cars. If the battery produces more electricity than needed, it can be sent back to the national grid and sold.

Energy prices have increased since the US-Iran war, which makes citizens worried about electricity. However, if electricity costs keep increasing, the government will face pressure to help its citizens. Meanwhile, recently, Tesla's prices have also fallen because of strong competition from cheap Chinese-made vehicles and some public criticism of Musk’s political views. In 2025, sales dropped by about 8.9 per cent compared to the previous year, and it also discontinued sales of its Model S sedans and Model X SUVs.
