Panic, confusion, and anger erupted among H-1B visa workers from India and China as they scrambled to return to the U.S. following President Donald Trump's new visa fee announcement, amid his broader immigration crackdown. Tech firms and banks sent urgent memos advising employees to return by Sunday and avoid leaving the country.
A White House official clarified the order targeted only new applicants, not current visa holders or renewals, easing confusion. Still, many Indian nationals at San Francisco airport cut vacations short, with some forcing their way off delayed flights upon hearing the news. An engineer described the emotional toll of choosing whether to stay with family or remain in the U.S.
On Chinese social media, visa holders shared distress, with posts of disappointment and frustration after ending trips early. For example, a woman flying from New York to Paris had her flight turned back after airline negotiations, cancelling her plans.
Most major companies, such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Goldman Sachs, have issued travel advisories. Amazon indicated no action was needed for current H-1B visa holders. By Sunday, some panic had subsided, according to IBM’s Vice Chairman.
Trump's immigration policies, including recent limits on legal immigration and crackdowns on the H-1B program, mark a shift from his earlier support. The administration says the program suppresses wages, but supporters argue it brings needed talent.
After the announcement, social media buzzed with debates, especially about visas. The proclamation accused companies of abusing H-1B to lower wages and said fee exemptions could be granted at the Homeland Security secretary’s discretion.
