Voice of America Shut Down by President Donald Trump

For the last 80 years, Voice of America has been used to spread news into various countries, mainly authoritarian, where reliable sources of news and information were a little hard to come by. Now, those broadcasts have just ceased to exist as the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, signed an executive order that called for the dismantling of the federal agency responsible for the Voice of America. As a result, hundreds of journalists, executives and other employees at the organisation were informed that they were being put on paid leave for an indefinite period.

Most of the content by theVoice of America is made in Washington and then transmitted to its affiliates throughout the world. Now that most of the workforce of the federal broadcasting agency is on leave, some of its radio stations worldwide went dark or started airing music rather than American news. On the other hand, some of the affiliates will stay online but without any contributions from the United States of America. However, the most daunting part is that these affiliates also air news from countries like Russia and China, which Voice of America, in effect, counters. The broadcasting company was set up in 1942 to combat Nazi propaganda in the Latin America and other parts of the world.

The Trump administration wanted to shut down Voice of America as a part of a broader effort to weaken the news media in America. For instance, the White House banned the Associated Press from covering certain subjects as the news agency refused to use “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico”, as suggested by the Trump administration.
