Trump Files $10 Billion Suit Over Leaked Tax Returns

U.S. President Donald Trump and his two sons filed a billion-dollar lawsuit against the federal government for leaking information about their business and personal tax returns.

The official complaint was filed in federal court in Miami, seeking $10 billion in return. The Trump family accused the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the U.S. tax body, and the Treasury Department of failing to secure personal financial information from a contractor.

The contractor, Charles "Chaz" Littlejohn, was sentenced to 5 years after being found guilty of leaking personal financial information in U.S. media outlets.

At the time of the 2016 elections, Trump said he would not disclose his tax returns because he was under audit, making him the first person in 50 years to refuse to do so. He said the same thing in the 2020 re-election.

But in September 2020, before the November elections, the New York Times published a report on Trump's tax returns, revealing that he paid only $750 in federal income taxes in the year he won the election and no taxes in 10 of the previous 15 years.

Two years later, in 2022, Trump released the tax-related documents himself.

The lawsuit said that it was the responsibility of the IRS and the Treasury Department to protect the information, but they failed to do so. Trump and his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, and the Trump Organisation said they faced reputational and financial harm that affected their business.

Littlejohn pleaded guilty in 2023 for stealing tax data from Trump and many wealthy Americans while working as a contractor for the IRS.

Littlejohn committed these crimes because, according to him, Trump is a danger to democracy, and this needs to be disclosed for the sake of political norms.
