The administration has “aggressively rolled back electric vehicle rules” put in place under the Biden administration, officials said, arguing the actions will help foster a more market-responsive auto sector. Duffy insisted the moves “will bring car prices down and allow car companies to offer products that Americans want to buy.” He added that the approach was not antagonistic toward EVs, saying “this is not a war on EVs at all … We shouldn’t use government policy to encourage EV purchases all the while penalizing combustion engines.”
President Donald Trump, amid ongoing economic pressures and ahead of the November midterms, has emphasised lowering consumer costs. Average new car transaction prices hit a record $50,326 in December as buyers opted for pricier trucks and SUVs, research firm Cox Automotive reported. Trump last year signed legislation ending a $7,500 EV tax credit, rescinding California’s EV mandates and cancelling penalties for automakers that fail to meet fuel efficiency targets.
Zeldin said the government “should not be forcing, requiring, mandating that the market go in a direction other than what the American consumer is demanding.” Meanwhile, Greer maintained that car prices are “trending down” despite tariffs on imported vehicles and parts.
