Trump Urges NATO Allies to Act on Reopening Strait of Hormuz

The US President has warned NATO countries that they could face a “very bad” future if they do not help in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, an important sea route for global oil trade. He also said he might delay his planned visit to China to meet President Xi Jinping until he knows China’s position on the issue, according to the comments published by the Financial Times on Sunday.

Trump told the newspaper that "I think China should help too because China gets 90% of its oil from the Straits," Because of this, Trump said it is fair for China to help ensure the safety of the waterway. He added that he would prefer to understand China’s stance before travelling to Beijing for talks with Xi.

Trump also asked several countries, including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and Britain, to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, these ships could help in keeping the narrow waterway open for shipping as Iranian forces continue attacks following US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

"We’re hitting them very hard," Trump said of Iranian forces. The Strait of Hormuz became unsafe after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran more than two weeks ago, and  Iran effectively blocked the route. This waterway is very important because about 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas normally passes through it.

Trump also warned that the US could attack Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export center, if needed.
