In order to expand its footprint in new territories, Uber has made a bid to buy Delivery Hero, the German food delivery company that owns most of Talabat, the food delivery app listed in Dubai. The offer values Delivery Hero at about $14.8 billion, and if it goes through, it would make Uber the biggest food delivery player outside China, a monicker it has been longing for quite some time now.
Here's the thing though, Uber isn't buying Talabat directly. Delivery Hero will still hold its 80% stake in Talabat through a subsidiary called Delivery Hero MENA. So, in reality, the 20% that regular investors bought when Talabat listed on the Dubai market back in December 2024 doesn't change hands. Talabat says its day-to-day business, leadership, and stock listing will stay the same. Only the ownership above it shifts to Uber.
The deal covers Delivery Hero's business across 50 countries, which brought in around $42 billion worth of orders last year. There's a separate piece too, Delivery Hero is selling off its operations in 14 other markets to a US firm called SSW Partners for close to $1.6 billion.

Uber plans to pay for the deal using cash it has on hand plus a €14 billion loan. It's also promised to keep Delivery Hero's Berlin office open until at least 2029 and put €2 billion into Germany over the next five years. The whole thing is expected to close sometime in the second half of 2027, once shareholders vote and regulators sign off.
