India to Join Pax Silica: New US Envoy Sergio Gor Takes Charge

India is poised to join the U.S.-led Pax Silica alliance next month, signifying a pivotal advancement in bilateral relations. Incoming U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gor announced India’s inclusion in this strategic initiative centred on semiconductor supply chains, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence, underscoring its rising influence in global technology and security spheres. Although not part of the original December launch, India’s invitation reflects its growing importance on the world stage.

Gor emphasised the strong bond between the two nations, affirming that despite occasional disagreements, they can be resolved through dialogue. He expressed optimism about reviving trade negotiations that have been delayed by the U.S. imposition of 50% tariffs on Indian goods. Initiated nearly a year ago during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington, these talks have seen limited progress despite multiple rounds and high-level visits.

Highlighting India’s global stature, Gor reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to cooperation and outlined plans to formally induct India into Pax Silica in February to bolster strategic collaboration in the Indo-Pacific. Notably, Gor also hinted at a potential visit by President Joe Biden to India within the next two years, amid efforts to accelerate the Quad Summit.

His spontaneous, lively delivery during the speech, deliberately breaking tradition, symbolised a proactive diplomatic approach. Amid ongoing tensions over former President Trump's remarks and trade issues involving Russian oil imports, Gor’s arrival underscores a shared goal: forging resilient, constructive relations amid global uncertainties. His regional visits, including to Pakistan and Bangladesh, will be closely watched as U.S.-India relations continue to develop.
