US Steps In With Major Investment to Secure Rare Earth Supply

The US government has decided to invest $1.6 billion in an American company that works with rare earth minerals. This step is taken to reduce the china’s control over these minerals.

The deal is with USA Rare Earth, and the US government will get a stake ( share ) in the company.

Rare earth minerals are very important as they are used in smartphones, electric vehicles, and defence equipment. USA Rare Earth owns special “heavy” rare-earth minerals, which are mostly used in defence technology, and said the funds will be used for mining, processing, metal-making, and magnet manufacturing.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said this investment will make the US less dependent on foreign countries for minerals

Out of the total investment of $1.6 billion, $1.3 billion will be provided as a loan by the US government, while $277 million will be provided as government funding to support the company’s expansion and operations.

The company also raised $1.5 billion from private investors led by Inflexion Point, chaired by Michael Blitzer, who also serves as the chairman of USA Rare Earth Minerals. After this announcement, the company’s share price went up by more than 15%.

Rare earth minerals have become a key issue in US–China trade talks. Many US companies depend on these minerals, but China controls about 90% of global rare-earth production. China has also reduced its exports, which puts pressure on the US. This news came after Donald Trump said the US had abasic deal with Greenland, which may also provide access to rare-earth minerals.

Over the past year, the US government has also invested in other companies that work with critical minerals. It signed a $1.4 billion agreement with Vulcan Elements to support local production and also invested in MP Materials, which operates the only active rare earth mine in the country.

As part of this strategy, the Donald Trump administration has also worked with other countries, including Australia, signing an agreement in October to increase supplies of rare earths and other key minerals.
