A prior US agreement with the United Arab Emirates permitted it to import 500,000 of Nvidia’s advanced AI chips every year, starting in 2025. This deal is crucial to boost the UAE's construction of data centres, which are crucial in developing artificial intelligence models. Some sources said that the agreement would end in 2027, but it could have lasted until 2030.
The deal stipulates that 20% of the chips, or 100,000 per year, will go to UAE’s tech firm G42, while the rest will be split among U.S. companies with large AI operations. Companies like Microsoft and Oracle might also look to build data centres in the UAE. The agreement is still being negotiated and changed before finalising.
This week, US President Donald Trump is on a tour of the Gulf region. On Tuesday, he announced deals worth $600 billion with Saudi Arabia, which includes a deal to buy large quantities of AI chips from Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, and Qualcomm. Trump is trying to improve relations with some Gulf countries, which is also a key goal of his administration.
