Political Standoff Fuels Prolonged US Shutdown

The U.S. government entered its second day of shutdown on Thursday as negotiations between President Donald Trump and Democratic lawmakers failed to reach a funding agreement. This deadlock has caused federal agencies to reduce operations, resulting in hundreds of thousands of workers facing furloughs or potential layoffs.

In his initial response, President Trump urged Republicans to seize the opportunity. “Republicans must use this opportunity of Democrat-forced closure to eliminate waste, inefficiency, and fraud. Billions of dollars could be saved," he posted on Truth Social.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, approximately 750,000 federal employees could be furloughed on any given day, resulting in potential daily wage losses of around $400 million. The shutdown is also delaying key economic reports, including the monthly jobs report and weekly unemployment claims, causing concern for an already fragile economy.

The White House indicated that, if the funding gap persists, there could be not only a temporary suspension but also layoffs.

White House officials accused Democrats of prioritizing healthcare for undocumented immigrants over government funding. “Democrats in Congress have shut down the federal government because they care more about funding healthcare for illegal immigrants than serving the American people,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer denied the accusation. “Donald Trump makes it clear: He is using the American people as pawns, threatening pain on the country as blackmail,' he said, according to foreign media.
