Big Exit! US to Withdraw From 66 International Firms

The United States has decided to leave 66 global bodies, including 31 United Nations agencies. This process began after President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to withdraw from bodies deemed contrary to American interests.

The White House said these organizations no longer support US national security, economic growth, and sovereignty, and in some cases, they work against American priorities and norms. According to the administration, this decision affects 31 United Nations (UN) and 35 non-UN international institutions.

Trump's order instructed all government agencies to take immediate steps to implement the withdrawals. For UN global bodies, this significant step will limit US participation and financial contributions, where permitted under American law.

The White House said that this big move follows a thorough review of international treaties, conventions, and organizations in which the US is involved. The review concludes that various international bodies advance policies on climate change, global governance, and social issues that contradict US values and economic interests.

Administration officials reportedly said that American taxpayers have spent billions of dollars funding international organizations that provide limited benefits. Some said they frequently criticize US policies or push agendas that undermine national sovereignty.

Among the affected UN institutions are those working on climate change, gender equality, population issues, energy, and water management. These include the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), UN Women, the UN Population Fund, UN Water, and UN Energy.
