White House and State Department officials have told the largest US Oil executives in recent weeks that they need to invest heavily in Venezuela and its oil industry to reverse some of the damage inflicted on it over the last two decades. The department said that the oil majors must proceed with it if they want to recover the losses they suffered two decades ago. This comes after the US extracted the president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, along with his wife.
In the 2000s, following President Hugo Chávez's demand, Venezuela seized the assets of many international oil companies after they rejected increased operational control by the state-run oil company PDVSA.
Many top oil companies, such as Exxon Mobil and ConocoPhillips, left the country and filed for arbitration, while competitor Chevron negotiated to remain in the country.
On Saturday, President Donald Trump said U.S. companies were ready to re-enter Venezuela and commit capital to revive its ailing oil industry, following the capture and removal of President Nicolás Maduro by American forces earlier in the day.

According to people familiar with internal U.S. administration discussions held in anticipation of Maduro’s exit, oil executives were told that any return would require companies to finance the sector’s reconstruction using their own funds. Those investments, officials said, would be a key condition for companies seeking to recover compensation tied to past asset seizures.
Oil companies are closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela and assessing its potential impact on a potential return to the region.
