A few entrepreneurs are born with an idea, while many others stumble across one when life challenges them. Viraj Bahl, the founder of Veeba Foods, undoubtedly falls into the latter category. His transition from a highly paid Merchant Navy employee to risking it all for his dream is about courage, perseverance, and belief.
Leaving the High Seas Behind
Viraj began his professional life early in his youth. At 18, he joined the Merchant Navy, an occupation that offered job security and the ability to travel the world. Over the next ten years, he travelled the globe and worked his way up the corporate ladder. However, halfway across the ocean, he became aware that somehow he was losing more than he was gaining. His comfort and pay were great, but his passion was gone. Food and cooking began to interest him - he began to ask himself, "What the heck am I doing?".
In 2009, Viraj Bahl made a decision. He quit his job with the Merchant Navy. Leaving behind a predictable life, he decided to pursue his uncertain future as an entrepreneur in the food industry.
First Failure: A Restaurant Dream That Didn't Work Out
Armed with dreams and savings, he started a restaurant in Delhi. This was his first experience as an entrepreneur, and it was just as much a test of his willpower for persistence. While the concept was dear to him, it wasn't long before the burdens of high rents, slender margins, and cost challenges began to weigh too heavily. In 2012, the restaurant had to be closed.
Viraj Bahl would later speak reflectively and humbly about this period, referring to himself as a "failed restaurateur." Rather than linger on a perceived failure, he learned from it.
Starting From Scratch
The restaurant's closure was difficult for Viraj and his family, but quitting was not an option. He and his wife made a serious decision: They sold their only home to support his next business venture. They moved in with their parents and began again, not with money but clarity and a plan.
Viraj Bahl spent time understanding the Indian market. He saw an opening. There were no international-quality sauces or condiments that fit the Indian palate. There was an opportunity. While international QSR brands grew, there was a gap in volume and consistency for quality sauces. The dot was connected, and Viraj put himself in position for his next steps.
Building Veeba from the Ground Up
Viraj Bahl established Veeba Foods in Neemrana, Rajasthan, in 2013, targeting the B2B market. Veeba's B2B aspect began when it supplied sauces and condiments to big QSR chains such as Domino's, Pizza Hut, and Burger King. Once the food service received traction, Veeba expanded to retail and launched products such as ketchup, mayonnaise, and a few varieties of salad dressings made for Indian food palettes.
By 2014, the start-up was receiving investor interest.
Viraj secured ₹3crore, giving the company a good valuation and the ability to think of growth. Over the years, many products were added to the Veeba portfolio, offering various sauces and condiments while establishing quality and innovation.
In 2024, Veeba further expanded into new product categories with Tasty Pixel, designed for younger audiences, and WokTok, which offered its own range of Chinese and other pan-Asian sauces, launching another phase of the Veeba journey.

Reflecting on his past, Viraj calls his early failures opportunities. "If my business hadn't closed, I would have never started my brand," he said. His journey serves as a reminder that setbacks can be setups.
In 2022, Viraj Bahl also took to the stage of Shark Tank India Season 4, not just in his capacity as a business leader defending his brand but as a person of resilience and reinvention. His journey from failed restaurants to founding one of India's leading sauce brands is a testament to the possibility of turning things around based on belief in yourself and action.
