Walmart and Google said customers will now be able to use the Google AI assistant Gemini to more easily discover and buy products at Walmart stores and at its warehouse club, Sam’s Club.
The new, incoming CEO of Walmart, John Furner and Google CEO Sundar Pichai made the announcement during an annual conference, the National Retail Federation’s Big Show, held at New York City’s Javits Center. However, the companies didn’t share any details about the new features to be added or the deal's financial terms. They shared that the experience will first launch in the US and then expand internationally.
The deal with Google underscores Walmart’s broader strategy to remain competitive as AI-driven shopping gains momentum. In October, the retailer partnered with OpenAI to introduce ChatGPT’s “Instant Checkout,” enabling users to purchase products without leaving the chatbot. OpenAI has since extended the capability to Walmart and other retailers, including Etsy and Shopify merchants such as Skims, Vuori and Spanx.

The new CEO of Walmart, John Furner, shared his views on the deal and said, “The transition from traditional web or app search to agent-led commerce represents the next great evolution in retail. We aren’t just watching the shift, we are driving it.”
Pichai, on the other hand, called the development “transformative” and said the agentic AI “helps us meet customers earlier in their shopping journey and in more places.” “Over time, these agents will make it easier for customers to find what they need, want and love”, he added.
