Elon Musk, the CEO of xAI, has recently directed his staff to provide summaries of their recent work and outline their upcoming plans. In an email sent on Tuesday afternoon, Musk asked all employees to submit a one-page report detailing their accomplishments over the past four weeks and their goals for the next four.
According to a copy of the email obtained by CNN, the deadline for submission was set for noon on Thursday. This request coincides with a significant reorganization at xAI, as the company shifts its strategy toward specialized AI instructors tailored to industries such as STEM, finance, medicine, and safety.
Amid this strategic pivot, Musk's company reportedly laid off over 500 data annotators last week, many from its generalist AI tutor team, as reported by Reuters. The layoffs aimed to reduce the number of generalist AI tutors, while xAIannounced plans to expand its workforce in the domain of specialized AI, to grow its team tenfold. In response to inquiries, xAI clarified via a post on X that it was hiring across multiple fields and emphasized its commitment to growth.
Musk has repeatedly asked employees to detail their work, including in August 2024 when staff summarized their impact to align stock options. He has also urged federal employees to report weekly achievements to assess productivity. Some directives, like printing and destroying code, seem impractical. These requests likely aim to boost performance and accountability, possibly to incentivize contributions through stock options.
In response to industry concerns over Big Tech's AI expansion and censorship issues, Musk founded xAI in 2023, aiming to develop safer AI systems. The company is known for its chatbot Grok, which is integrated within the X social network.

Musk's recent directives reflect his emphasis on accountability, strategic reorganization, and a focus on specialized AI development as xAI navigates a competitive and rapidly evolving tech landscape.
