Zydus Lifesciences Limited and MSN Laboratories Private Limited announced the launch of Riociguat Tablets in 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.5 mg, 2 mg, and 2.5 mg strengths in the United States on Monday, Oct. 5, 2026. According to a report by PR Newswire M&A, the companies represent the first to introduce a generic version of Adempas in the U.S. market. The product was developed and is manufactured by MSN, while Zydus handles commercialization.
Regulatory Status and Indication Details
The United States Food and Drug Administration approved Riociguat Tablets as a generic equivalent of Adempas across all five strengths. Riociguat functions as a soluble guanylate cyclase stimulator. It is indicated for adult patients with persistent or recurrent chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension following surgical treatment, or inoperable chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, to improve exercise capacity and World Health Organization functional class. It is also indicated for adults with pulmonary arterial hypertension to improve exercise capacity, improve World Health Organization functional class, and delay clinical worsening.
Executive Commentary on Complex Generics
Dr. Sharvil Patel, managing director at Zydus Lifesciences Limited, noted that being first to market with generic riociguat serves as a milestone for the company and for patients. Patel stated that the rollout reflects the strength of the company's complex-generics pipeline and the execution of day-one launches in specialty categories. Dr. MSN Reddy, founder and chairman and managing director of MSN Laboratories, described riociguat as a technically demanding molecule. Reddy added that bringing the first generic to the U.S. demonstrates the depth of the company's integrated active pharmaceutical ingredient and formulation research and development alongside its manufacturing scale, similar to how Benchmark's full partnership to address breakout startup trends at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 highlights specialized operational scaling.
Global Sales and Market Dynamics
Pulmonary arterial hypertension and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension are rare, progressive, and life-threatening conditions where patients typically remain on therapy for life. Prior to this partnership, riociguat was available in the United States only as the branded product. While sales of riociguat are not reported by IQVIA, Bayer's Annual Report 2025 noted that global sales of Adempas reached approximately EUR 745 million, or approximately USD 850 million, in 2025.
