Aetna Announces 2027 Medicare Plans

Aetna, a CVS Health company, announced its 2027 Medicare product lineup on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026, offering expanded benefits, lower-cost HMO options, and broader chronic condition support for older adults nationwide. According to a report by PR Newswire M&A, the insurer will offer Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans across 41 states and Washington, D.C., reaching 57 million Medicare-eligible beneficiaries. The portfolio includes Medicare Advantage-only plans, the SilverScript Choice prescription drug plan, and Medicare Supplement products covering dental, vision, hearing, and indemnity needs. These developments run parallel to other corporate shifts, such as when Huawei plans Q1 2027 launch of new Ascend 960DT AI chip to challenge Nvidia in the broader technology sector, while health insurers focus on expanding access.

"The right Medicare coverage protects your health and your peace of mind," said Jeff Fernandez, president of Aetna Medicare. "Our 2027 plans put our members and their experience at the center, offering benefits and services they can trust to support their health needs and help them live their healthiest lives."

Expanded HMO Access and Zero Cost-Shares

Aetna is sharpening its focus on HMO products for 2027, expanding Prime HMO plan offerings in select markets to grant members access to local health care providers at a reduced cost. Every county featuring an Aetna Medicare Advantage plan will include at least one option featuring a $0 monthly plan premium alongside low or zero copays for primary care visits and an over-the-counter allowance. Essential benefits maintain $0 copays for Tier 1 drugs at preferred pharmacies, alongside dental, vision, and hearing coverage paired with a SilverSneakers basic fitness membership.

Preventive services carry $0 cost-shares for in-network care, including annual physicals, colonoscopies, mammograms, and routine eye and hearing exams. Most plans incorporate $0 copays for primary care visits and labs. Eligible members using select plans powered by CVS Flex Benefits can utilize the Aetna Medicare Extra Benefits Card, consolidating all card-based benefit allowances into a single card for use at participating retail locations, including CVS stores. Meanwhile, the High Value Provider Incentive Program enters its fourth year by expanding into two new states, rewarding members who select primary care providers experienced in Medicare care with additional Extra Benefits Card funds and lower out-of-pocket costs.

Special Needs Plans and Chronic Care Support

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 90% of adults age 65 and older have at least one chronic condition, and many face social and financial challenges that impact their health. Aetna is scaling its specialized product offerings by expanding Chronic Condition Special Needs Plans to six new states, bringing total availability to 25 states. These plans target members managing conditions such as diabetes mellitus, chronic heart failure, and specific cardiovascular disorders, pairing care coordination with $0 copays for primary care and select chronic condition specialist visits. Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans will continue providing coordinated coverage for individuals qualifying for both Medicare and Medicaid. These program expansions occur amid broader economic adjustments, similar to how The buyback boom returns, even as CFOs whisper about a 2027 capex cycle across multiple commercial sectors.

All C-SNP and D-SNP participants receive a monthly allowance on an Extra Benefits Card for over-the-counter items, while qualifying chronic condition members can apply the allowance toward everyday expenses including healthy groceries, personal care products, transportation, and utilities. Prescription drug coverage integrates with stand-alone SilverScript PDPs and integrated Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans backed by CVS Health. All MAPD plans feature $0 Tier 1 drug copays at preferred pharmacies. D-SNPs provide $0 Tier 1 copays alongside $0 Tier 1 and Tier 2 copays for up to a 100-day supply at in-network pharmacies, while C-SNPs utilize custom drug lists featuring targeted generic drugs with $0 Tier 1 copays. Pharmacy networks span CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, and grocers such as Kroger, Albertsons, and H-E-B, with the SilverScript Choice stand-alone plan offering reduced cost-sharing and $0 Tier 1 copays.

Digital Tools and Prior Authorization Streamlining

To reduce friction in health care navigation, Aetna is pairing personalized support with digital technology. The Aetna Clinical Collaboration program embeds Aetna nurses alongside hospital staff to assist Medicare Advantage members transitioning home or into skilled nursing facilities. The award-winning Aetna Health app now features conversational AI for plain-language benefit navigation, alongside Aetna Care Paths to clarify procedures and offer personalized guidance for specific conditions.

Prior authorization processes have been updated for speed and transparency. Aetna reports that more than 95% of eligible prior authorizations are approved within 24 hours, while 82% are processed in real time. Additional supplemental offerings feature annual Healthy Home Visits from licensed Signify Health clinicians at no extra cost, providing home environment evaluations to identify fall risks and clinical needs. Aetna Resources For Living supports physical and emotional well-being by addressing loneliness and connecting members with local transportation, housing, food, and caregiver programs. The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026.
