EUV pellicles and mask shops emerge as the unglamorous chokepoint

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The industry can talk for hours about EUV scanners and still trip over a pellicle. Mask shops that write the most advanced layers are as congested as any lithography bay, and a late reticle can idle a tool that costs more than a regional airport.

Vendors said customers are now ordering safety-stock masks for critical layers, a practice that would have looked wasteful two years ago. The alternative is missing a GPU or networking-chip launch because one layer could not be written in time.

This is the part of the semiconductor story that rarely makes a keynote. It is also the part that decides whether a design team's 18-month effort becomes a product or a postmortem.
